Although you can write programs for the Palm Computing platform in several languages, the language of choice for most development is still C or C++. C/C++ allows you to write very small programs that interface directly to the operating system APIs. In this chapter we'll discuss the Palm OS Software Development Kit, the two C/C++ compilers (CodeWarrior and GCC) that you can use for Palm development, and some C/C++ programming issues specific to the Palm Computing platform. We'll also look at the Palm OS Emulator, which emulates a Palm device in software so that you can run your applications without downloading them to an actual device, and the Palm console. At the end of this chapter you'll be able to create, compile, and debug a new, but very basic, Palm application with the tool of your choice. In the next chapter we'll discuss how applications work and how to write them.
